Abstract

Concrete is the most frequently used material in the construction industry, but it also requires a lot of water to produce, so there is a pressing need for research to reduce the amount of water used to produce concrete, particularly in India, where water shortage is a major issue. With this in mind, an effort has been made to develop internally cured concrete employing light weight aggregates such as expanded clay. Expanded clays will internally supply enough moisture to the concrete to compensate for water evaporation during the hardening process. The strength characteristics of Normal Strength Concrete cast with the internal-curing agent LECA were evaluated and compared with the corresponding conventionally cured concrete in this study. IS method of mix design was adopted, for the normal strength internally cured concrete of M25 grade. For producing internally cured concrete 15% & 20% of coarse aggregates were replaced with Light weight expanded clay aggregates. Produced light weight mixes showed light weight, comparable compressive strength and significant reduction in water consumption.
