Abstract
Black cotton soil, characterized by its expansive and shrinkable properties, poses significant challenges for constructing stable bridge foundations. Its high swelling and shrinkage potential, caused by seasonal moisture variations, can lead to foundation movement, cracks, and structural instability. The soil's low bearing capacity further complicates foundation design, necessitating innovative engineering solutions. This paper explores the key challenges in building bridge foundations on black cotton soil and reviews various design approaches, including deep foundations (such as pile foundations), soil stabilization techniques, and proper drainage systems. The use of these strategies ensures long-term structural integrity and reduces the risk of foundation failure.
