Abstract
Human beings have always organized their lives around shared activities rituals, work, play, faith, and collective struggle. Yet contemporary societies increasingly report social disconnection, loneliness, and declining participation in communal life, even as digital platforms multiply opportunities for interaction. This review examines why individuals choose to participate in social activities and how such participation shapes social identity and group dynamics. Drawing on social psychology, sociology, and behavioral science, the paper synthesizes research on intrinsic and extrinsic motivations for participation and connects these motivations to processes of identity formation, belonging, and group cohesion. Rather than assuming social participation is uniformly beneficial, this review critically explores its ambivalent outcomes, including exclusion, conformity, and performative belonging. By integrating classical theories with contemporary empirical findings, the paper proposes a motivation participation identity pathway and highlights implications for community design, social platforms, and future research.
